Listen to this! Beneath The Neon Glow – Elles Bailey

Elles Bailey, the powerhouse singer-songwriter from Bristol, has significantly impacted the blues, roots, and Americana music scenes with her smoky, soulful voice and heartfelt performances. Overcoming a childhood bout of pneumonia that left her with a distinctive husky tone, Bailey has built a reputation for her emotive songwriting and dynamic stage presence. Her critically acclaimed albums, such as ‘Wildfire,’ ‘Road I Call Home’ and particularly her last album, Shining in the Half Light, have garnered numerous awards and showcased her unique ability to blend traditional blues with modern Americana
Her new album, Beneath the Neon Glow, finds her artistically in a much different place than she was while writing and recording Shining in the Half Light. It shows Bailey putting a greater emphasis on melody than ever before. Produced by Dan Weller (Enter Shikari) and recorded with her exceptional live band, Beneath The Neon Glow explores the multifaceted nature of love across ten powerful tracks that seamlessly blend British roots, Americana, and blues. Through raw and honest songwriting, Elles delves into themes of heartbreak, friendship, and enduring love, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into her emotional journey
The result is an incredibly catchy collection of 10 new songs. The album opener and first single, Enjoy the Ride, was the last track Bailey recorded for Beneath the Neon Glow. With its shuffle beat and lyrical emphasis on embracing the journey over the destination, the song serves as what Bailey described as an “opening statement” for the album
Elsewhere, the album channels classic British rock of the 70s on tracks like Leave the Light On and 1972. The former brings a funky, classic rock vibe with a ‘Smoke on the Water’ inspired guitar riff. The song explores the toll of life on the road, with Bailey candidly admitting her selfishness. It also features a full-blown 70s-80s Richie Blackmore-esque solo, adding to its retro charm. Meanwhile, 1972 dives deeper into nostalgia with its funky, retro sound, horns, and 70s production aesthetics. Bailey sings about a yearning for the era of bell bottoms and vinyl, capturing the essence of 70s New York and classic Soul with finesse
Silhouette in a Sunset is a ballad that channels full ‘Nights in White Satin’ vibes, telling the story of a failed friendship and relationship that still lingers. Bailey’s evocative lyrics and plaintive guitar work create a deeply emotional atmosphere, making it one of the album’s highlights. In Truth Ain’t Gonna Save Us, Bailey bridges rock, blues, and country, singing about a relationship on the brink. The song’s moody melodies, driven by insistent guitar riffs and driving drums, make it a relatable anthem for those struggling in love. Meanwhile, Ballad of a Broken Dream showcases Bailey’s storytelling prowess with a smooth melody that blends modern country and rock. The song tells the poignant tale of a musician who has burned too many bridges and finds solace only on stage. Bailey’s evocative lyrics and the song’s chugging guitars and lavish piano create a compelling narrative. Lines like “A big fish in a small town” and “Here he sits playing for tips, and no one knows his name” paint a vivid picture, making this track a standout for its emotional depth and melodic appeal
Elsewhere on the album, there’s a depth and diversity unrivalled amongst artists of a similar vein. If This is Love has a bluesy, Status Quo-esque sound. Soulful backing vocals and a classic organ solo complement the empowering lyrics about escaping a toxic relationship. Let It Burn opens with dramatic piano strokes and passionate vocals, building into a massive pop ballad reminiscent of Adele. Bailey’s pain is palpable as she questions her place in a relationship. Love Yourself offers a simple, uplifting message with an Aretha Franklin influence, while Turn off the News closes the album on a reflective note. This moody ballad urges listeners not to be complacent in the face of global pain, delivering a powerful message with Bailey’s passionate vocals and restrained guitar work
‘Beneath the Neon Glow’ is a masterful blend of blues, rock, and country, showcasing Elles Bailey’s exceptional vocal range and songwriting skills. Each track offers a unique story, wrapped in diverse sonic landscapes that keep the listener engaged from start to finish. Whether through empowering anthems or deeply emotional ballads, Bailey’s new album is a testament to her artistry and ability to resonate with listeners profoundly
